Michael Kane - GROM since 2013

Michael is from the Greenville, SC area. 2015 will mark his 3rd season with the GROM Racing Team. With the departure of Josh Rogers, David Dressler, Owen Witcher and veterans Jimmy Leslie and Eric Vest at the end of the 2014 Season, Michael is the senior member of the team for 2015. While Michael likes a challenging technical section or a gnarly rock garden, his eyes light up at the site of a double or a tabletop. That’s when he launches it for some serious air. He is equally at home on a downhill or dual slalom bike and loves to race slalom every chance he gets. Blessed with natural talent, a smooth riding style and ALWAYS riding with flair, he catches the attention of race photographers wherever he rides. Michael’s race age was 16 in 2014 and he raced in the very competitive Cat 1/18 and Under men’s category. Michael is looking forward to riding and winning in this same category in 2015.

Scout Clark - GROM since 2014

Scout is from Greenville, SC, and 2015 will be her second consecutive season on the GROM Racing team.  2014 was Scout's first full season trying her hand at downhill racing, and she found it to be both challenging and rewarding, although the scarcity of female competitors at some of the races was frustrating at times.  One way she plans on addressing that is to move up to USAC Cat 1 in 2015 and perhaps race in the Pro class at select races.  Scout likes sports in general and runs both Cross Country and Track for her high school.  Year-round, she enjoys trail riding in the nearby Pisgah National and Dupont State forests.  Scout held a Cat 2 license with USAC during 2014, and her racing age was 15.

Phillip Steele - GROM since 2014

Phillip is from Burnsville, West Va., and 2015 will be Phillip's second season on the GROM Racing team.  Despite his young age, Phillip is an experienced gravity rider, having ridden his first race at Snowshoe Mountain at the ripe old age of six. With a natural ability to choose great lines and a no fear attitude, Phillip aspires to make it to the World Cup level, but hasn't forgotten that “fun” is first and foremost. The Steele Family Farm in Burnsville, West Virginia has 93 acres of trails, tracks, jumps, and drops allowing Phillip the opportunity to ride every chance he gets. He enjoys working with his family on the farm, in addition to hunting and training his dog, a German Shorthaired Pointer named Ellie.  Phillip held a Cat 2 license with USAC during 2014, and his racing age was 13.  At Snowshoe he raced in the 18u Weekend Warrior class.

Zach Gareis - GROM since 2015

Zach is from Pennsylvania and 2015 will be his first season with GROM Racing.  Zach is relatively new to the downhill sport.  While 2014 was his first full year competing in downhill mountain biking, he is not new to riding things with two wheels.  Zach has been riding bikes and dirt bikes most of his life.  He has raced bmx and motocross and still competes in motorcycle hare scramble races (such as the GNCC Series).  When he is not on two wheels, Zach plays hockey and lacrosse for his school.  During winter, he loves going down mountains on his snowboard.  Zach is looking forward to a great year with GROM.  Zach held a Cat 3 license during 2014 and his racing age was 13.  At Snowshoe he raced in the 18u Intro class.

Ian Bongard - GROM since 2015

Ian is from Roanoke, VA, and 2015 will be his first season with GROM Racing.  Ian started racing motorcycles with his family when he was 4 years old in 2003. After 5 full seasons of racing, riding evolved more into fun rides than competitions.  In middle school he ran Cross Country and Track, and became involved in the technical side of the Theatre Arts as a Lighting Technician.  Through hard work and commitment, he quickly became a respected, and paid, lighting professional at Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke Va.  Recently he became probably the youngest Lighting Director in the country, at the age of 15, in the production of The Wizard of Oz.

Ian had always ridden cross country bikes with his family but a trip to Snowshoe with his brother in 2013 sparked his interest in downhill mountain biking.   On old equipment, he quickly proved that he was fast and wanted to return to racing, this time in the Gravity Series.   With a new downhill bike in hand, 2014 was his first full season of racing and he has continued to learn and improve rapidly.   He really likes the people he meets riding and the friendships that have developed. He looks forward to learning more, getting faster, and building even more lasting friendships with GROM racing this year.  Ian competed in the 18u Intro class at Snowshoe in 2014.

2014 Season Highlights:

  • 3rd Place, Snowshoe Gravity Series Race #1
  • 2nd Place, Snowshoe Gravity Series Race #2
  • 1st Place, Snowshoe Gravity Series Race #3
  • 2nd Place, Snowshoe Gravity Series final standings
  • 6th Place, Snowshoe Chomolungma Challenge, Men's Solo age 12-25
