2016 GROM Racing News

GROM Racing is emerging from Winter hibernation and is pleased to announce some initial details of its 2016 program.

Sponsor Update

We are pleased to confirm a continued relationship with title sponsor Snowshoe Bike Park, the premier bike park on the east coast.  If you have yet to sample their steep terrain, you owe it to yourself to grab your friends, load up your DH sleds and point your vehicle towards West Va. this summer!   Visit Snowshoe’s Mountain Adventure Center for the best in bikes and gear from Specialized, Troy Lee Designs, and Dakine.  Additional confirmed sponsors on board at this point include Industry Nine Componentry, Gamut USA, Hawley, Hawley Service Center, Smith Optics, and Wicked Wash Cleaner.  We can't thank these sponsors enough for their continued support, AND their great products and services.

 Rider Lineup

The off-season really has been “silly season”, that time of year when teams and racers are all negotiating with one another behind the scenes while publicly denying everything.  Change is inevitable, so let’s jump right in with the 2016 rider lineup.   We are disappointed to announce the departure of both MIchael Kane and Zach Gareis, but understand every rider has different needs and goals and we wish both of these fine young men the very best in their future endeavors.

We are excited to welcome the pairing of brothers Jordan and Brad Tunks, of Reston, Virginia to the team for 2016 !  Below, let's meet Jordan and Brad, along with returning riders Scout Clark, Phillip Steele, and Ian Bongard.

Jordan Tunks - GROM since 2016

Jordan is from Reston, Virginia, and 2016 will be his first season with the GROM racing program. Jordan started mountain biking four years ago when he rode at Snowshoe for the first time. Soon after, Jordan entered in his first race at Snowshoe and has been racing ever since then. In addition to riding, Jordan loves to ski and he plays varsity baseball for his high school during the spring. He looks forward to making new friends, progressing as a rider, and as a person with the GROM team in 2016. Jordan held a USAC Cat 2 license in 2015, and his racing age was 16.

Brad has been mountain biking on and off with his brother Jordan for several years, but 2015 was his first year of consistent riding. After a few months of riding in 2015 with his brother at Snowshoe, Brad quickly progressed and it was finally time for him to get a downhill bike and go racing. Last August, Brad entered his first race at Beech Mountain and placed 2nd in the Cat 3 14 and under category. Brad also loves to ski and will play baseball this spring for his high school. Brad is excited to see what 2016 has in store and cannot wait to get faster and meet new friends this year. Brad raced the Cat 3, 0-14 class in 2015 and his racing age was 14.

Scout is from Greenville, SC, and 2016 will be her third consecutive season on the GROM Racing team.  Hard to believe, but she is now the "elder statesman" (stateswoman ?) of GROM Racing !  2015 was Scout's second full season of Downhill competition, and she upped her game once again.  She even managed to fit in a few Enduro events during the summer, and hopes to do some more of those in 2016 as well.  Scout likes sports in general and runs both Cross Country and Track for her high school.  Year-round, she enjoys trail riding in the nearby Pisgah National and Dupont State forests, and has taken up rock climbing, which happens to be a great workout for riding. Scout held a Cat 1 license with USAC during 2015, and her racing age was 16.

Phillip is from Burnsville, West Va., and 2016 will be Phillip's third season on the GROM Racing team.  Despite his young age, Phillip is an experienced gravity rider, having ridden his first race at Snowshoe Mountain at the ripe old age of six. With a natural ability to choose great lines and a no fear attitude, Phillip aspires to make it to the World Cup level, but hasn't forgotten that “fun” is first and foremost. The Steele Family Farm in Burnsville, West Virginia has 93 acres of trails, tracks, jumps, and drops allowing Phillip the opportunity to ride every chance he gets. He enjoys working with his family on the farm, in addition to hunting and training his dog, a German Shorthaired Pointer named Ellie.  Phillip held a Cat 2 license with USAC during 2015, and his racing age was 14.  In 2016, he'll be competing in the ultra-competitive Cat 1 Juniors class.

Ian is from Roanoke, VA, and 2016 will be his second season with GROM Racing.  Ian had always ridden cross country bikes with his family but a trip to Snowshoe with his brother in 2013 sparked his interest in downhill mountain biking. He really likes the people he meets riding and the friendships that have developed while racing. He looks forward to learning more, getting faster, and building even more lasting friendships with GROM racing this year.  Outside of racing, Ian is involved in the technical side of the Theatre Arts as a Lighting Technician and became a respected, and paid, lighting professional at Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke Va. before the age of 15.  During 2016, Ian plans on stepping up to the ultra-competitive Cat 1 Juniors class.
